haha wow there's some ignorance in here.
why? because it's cost effective and it's proven to work. Some people would rather take their time because it's worth not spending money on a new paintjob or something. Others would rather spend more money buying a shield.
And yes, you are trying to prevent a rock chip, regardless if you get it on a smooth road or not.
