If for example it's a used car, over 3 years old, and an equivalent isn't easy to find in HK (e.g. Skyline 350GT Coupe, aka G35) then the price drops by a lot where it might actually be close to buying used in HK.

Actually importing a (used) car from Japan to HK is not as complicate as before
And, there're actually some people go directly to Japan and buy a used car over there and ship to HK
But, by doing this, you should expect to pay around 60% on top of the car price just for shipping and lic fee
For new car, importer only import models that aren't avaliable in HK
since it doesn't make any sense to buy a 'private import' when you can buy directly from the dealer. (ofcoz i mean when they are about the same price) Just like if you guys are in Toronto, it doesn't make sense to import a Honda from US, the price may be a little cheaper, but you lose all the warranty.
that's why those importer only sell JDM model
there're a lot of 'trick' when buying an import car, that's why i try to stay away with it unless i really really want that model
