It is possible to install the
base bushings without removing the center console, with a little help from an adhesive. I usually just put a piece of "fun tack" on the bushings and secure the bushings to the underside of the shift assembly, then place the shift assembly with the holes lined up and bolt it down. Some people have used a drop of super glue to hold them in place while working as mentioned earlier in the thread. If you do not have quick access to any of these, just unbolt the console and back it up several inches to create enough room to work.
