As Camerson said, you do need the adaptor. I got one for a compact flash card from Frey's for right at $10. I had the same problem as you when I first bought mine EX Nav. I didn't understand the technology and I managed to drop the compact flash card down into the unit.
I was able to fish it out with a thin straight bladed screw driver and a small piece of double sided tape. As far as I'm concerned, I was darned lucky.
The one thing that I think Cameron might be in error on is his statement that you can use any storage card you want, given the proper adaptor. My owners manual says the system is compatible with compact flash and SD memory cards. I'm not sure it'll work with anything else since it only specifies those two formats. Anyone else know for sure?
FWIW, I'm using a 2gb compact flash card and I've got it loaded with a bunch of audio books. I like listening to them when I'm on a road trip. I've got the equivelant of 27 CD's on that card. Aint technology amazing!
