I am a Service Advisor for BMW (BMW certified diag tech and ASE master tech as well) so I am more than familiar with customer concerns about idle quality and other cold start concerns and associated software updates etc.

Contemporary engines are pretty nutso considering we're still dealing with your basic four stroke cycle from 100+ years ago - When I hear about driveability concerns when the car is not even warmed up it in performance cars it really ticks me off - an engine that makes 100HP per liter @ 7K+ RPMs isn't going to idle perfectly on cold start - its just never going to happen - everything in automotive design/engineering is a compromise - A first gear ratio designed to get the engine to redline and in to second gear ASAP will never be smooth for cruising around @ 7MPH -

i expect this kind of thing from people who buy vehicles in response to their neighbors' vehicle purchases, but I would expect more from what's supposed to be an enthusiast forum -
