Sounds like someone had it overfilled to begin with... Which can also harm the tranny.

I have seen posts here and there where people have the car jacked up to the side and fill it until it is coming out... This is definitely the wrong procedure. Car should be level and the proper amount of fluid installed and only the proper amount.
