every shock degrades over time...lowering it reduces the full range of motion the shock was intended for thus making the shock work within a reduced optimal range...this in turn makes the shock work harder just to control the oscillations of the spring...some people have said that some progressive springs last long with stock shocks but that is relative as to what road surface you are on...on smooth small bumpy roads progressive springs have a spring rate equal to stock if not less...on bumpier stuff the spring rate "progresses" resulting in a shock having to control a stiffer spring which wont necassarily blow the shock but increase the rate at which they degrade...shocks never blow they just leak
