I know this seems like a lame DIY, but I have to say that the cargo net has turned out to be one of the most annoying mods I’ve performed thus far, so I figured you should all know what you are getting into if you purchase one.
Honda’s list of tools required:- Flat-tip screwdriver
- Rivnut tool
- Allen wrench
- 19 mm and 27 mm wrench
- Utility knife
- Felt-tip pen
- Drill
- 3 mm, 5.5 mm, and 9 mm Drill bits
- Center-punch
- Clip remover
- Eye protection
Tools that I could not easily obtain plus alternative options.- Rivnut tool—(thank you, thank you, Gone! You are fantastic!) DIY: Rivnut puller for install of trunk Cargo Net
- Metric drill bits—I tried with a conversion chart, but indeed up drilling slowly with a tapering bit
- Center-punch—a nail works just fine
- Clip remover—well-placed screw drivers
Cargo net install kit comes with:- the net
- six anchors--two of which are a different size
- six bolts (You will screw the bolts into the anchors before you start)
- two rivnuts
- and a template
First, you remove your trunk fabric. All of the clips will be simple except for two closest to the spare tire compartment. You will need to pry these off gently with screwdrivers.
Next, you widen the two upper holes in the trunk sides. You are supposed to use a 9mm drill bit for this, but you can use one of these if you are careful:
Paint the holes with touch-up paint, then install the rivnuts using the "proper" tool, or Gone's invention.
Now, you place the trunk lining back and lay the template out to mark your holes.
You can use a nail to poke through the fabric and mark the metal beneath. lift the fabric and use a 1/8th drill bit to start your four holes. Move up to a 7/32 bit.
Place all the fabric back and screw in your six anchors:
Put all the trunk brackets back into the fabric.
Cut four holes in your tray.
Attach the net vertically or horizontally and you are ready to buy groceries and
