You should really never be going into first gear when you're rolling. The only purpose of that gear is to get you going from a dead stop. If you really need to go into first when rolling, then you would want to rev match the gears for it to be a bit of a smoother transition. Otherwise, there's too much resistance for you to be putting it in gear while moving.
