I'm a bit confused about something...I've been using K&N fiflters for several years on the past several cars I've owned, currently have one in my GTI(going on 5 yrs with it) and when I opened the package the filter comes oiled from the factory and guess what? the entire filter element was oily on both sides since the cotton gauze just absorbs all of the oil...having said that what difference does it make what side gets oil? once you spray the oil all of it gets absorb throughout the whole element anyway, the 2 occasions I've sprayed mine I did the "filtering" side and it didn't matter since once the oil was absorbed, it looked like I had oil the entire filter and that's with me being conservative with the oil...you guys obviously haven't seen how you oil the circular(donut) filters, you dunk the whole thing in oil...just as long as you don't over do it you should be fine
