The rear main seal is on the back of the engine, it's behind the flexplate or flywheel and seals the crankshaft. The check to see if it's leaking is to check the weep hole where the transmission's bellhousing is bolted to the engine. if it's leaking it's going to be wettest around that area, depending upon the shape of the engine it can also seep onto the oil pan, soaking it too.

The weep hole where the transmission's bellhousing is bolted to the engine. Is that visual from under the car or do they need to remove something to check it? The reason I'm asking this is because visual inspection did not find any leaks from anywhere except the old heavy oil residue under the oil pan.
