Looks like you're well on your way to understanding the Navi. Sorry to hear about the issues. I haven't had an instance (yet) where I needed to change my routing twice, so the issue you had hasn't come up yet. But, I can definitely feel your frustration! At least you've figured out a way to bypass it, even if it's not the most desirable.
I actually had an issue similar to yours with the gas station, only I DID need gas badly. Luckily after the bars disappear from the display, we've still got about one and a half gallons left.
And you're right. There are several features that I don't use on a daily, or even weekly, basis. Have you tried using the voice commands? Those are tricky!
Good luck with the Navi. Hopefully you don't get stuck somewhere with no gas!
