The 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS is a great lens, and very user-friendly for a walkaround. Using a friend's, with a crop camera, I think you'd miss anything below 24mm very much though. It's not a light lens, but it's very handy and fits well even on the XT and XTi bodies. You get some very sharp pictures with it. My only problem would be (and it's a small complaint) is that it gets softer after 100mm.
