I got bit by the paintball bug this year too. Bought an upped Tippman 98 then passed it down to the wife and bought an Etek. Tippman 98's are a great starter gun. My wife drops it all the time and I never worry about it (last time we played I had to clear 1" of mud out of the barrel so she could keep going). Probably your cheapest and most reliable bet is a used Tippman 98. Batteries are costly to buy everytime you head out for electric markers. Remember to look at the big picture too. You still have to budget for a C02 tank ($40) + a hopper ($5) + oil ($5).
Definately isn't cheap. Try Craigslist and of course ebay as you already have. Buying a gun already upgraded can be a good route to take. Pbreview.com as mentioned above or pbnation.com have tons of resources.
