you can leave it in gear
i always leave my car in gear when parked (and have never had transmission issues), but unlike some people i dont JUST leave it in gear (personally i think thats just dumb). if you want to leave it in gear for that extra security but dont want to worry about your tranny do what I do: park, apply the emergency brake and then take your foot off the brake while in neutral. this will ensure that all the pressure goes to your rear (emergency) brakes. from there, shut the engine off and place it in gear, it should slide right in. you're not putting any pressure on the transmission but it will still offer a fallback if for whatever reason your emergency brake fails.
