Unfortunately, good lenses are generally where the big money come in when it comes to DSLR.

Do you wan't/need zoom? If you are willing to move around to get the right shot (rather than using zoom) you could get a 50mm f/1.8. It is a great lens. It is a fixed focal length, but it is super sharp and doesn't have any bad traits (like bad vignetting, distortion, etc.). It is pretty cheap (around $100 I think). It doesn't zoom, and won't do true macro, but it will take great shots to get you started.
