The OE box is no where as smooth on the inside compare to this, which hurts flow. It is the nature of injection/blow molded parts (i have to check).
There is a lot more than just fitting a shiny cylindrical pipe with a filter like many after market intake. Though it is hard to give a definite answer, the T1R's intake, like M&Ms and the Mugen RR appears to be purposeful for real life situation gains (ex. part throttle response). (I had to deal with air management system, mainly OE intake for 2 coop terms in case you question :) ).
