the enjoyment of driving
the independence from buses and carpools
getting to where I want when I want (opportunity cost of time)

vs

paying $4.00/g x 9.50 gallons
risk of dieing in a car accident
being able to spend the gas money on other things (opportunity cost of money)

You might have your own reasons for both sides such as global warming or stress, or something else. Each person has to weigh it out for themselves and then decide if the "true cost of gas" is worth it.

Also opportunity lost. Money spent on high fuel cost is now lost. It could have been spent paying down debt or put in a savings account.
