I "under mounted" my rear speakers because the factory cut out is too small and not circular.
I didn't want to cut out the metal because the front doors were a pain, and there's even less room to work with on the rear deck unless you want to work lying down in the trunk.
Since the sedan's trunk torsional bars give more clearance than the coupe's, I had no problem with undermounting. I did it with a .75" mdf speaker ring, and my 6.5 speaker's cone has a 5.9" diameter.
The mdf did in fact kinda create a "port," at first I wondered what a 0.75" L x 5.9" D port would do to the sound, but in fact I can't tell.
