"Long enough" after the cranking and cranking and cranking, is anything longer than every other Honda car takes to start normally and not sound like a piece of junk. Absolutely no reason the owner of a 8th gen Civic has to sit there cranking his/her car like it's a 20 year old heap with a weak battery and a burnt-out starter motor when everyone else turns the key (or pushes the button, as is increasingly more common these days) in their average-age-or-newer car, and their car starts right up, within a couple seconds at most and those couple seconds (not SEVERAL seconds like this unrelated problem that some Civics have) only even happens for emissions purposes or when it's super cold and the battery's just a little weaker.
And half the time it happens to me it's on a warm day (like today, 80F) after the car's only been sitting 2-3 hours. Other times it's first thing in the morning after it's been sitting all night. No temperature or emissions routine appears to relate to the starting problem.

The very fact that that it fails to start denotes a problem, not to mention that its occurrence is inconsistent and uncorrelated to any temperature or environment, time since last drive, or battery, immobilizer, or emissions component (all of which the dealership checked while attempting to diagnose). Heck, the fact that THEY understand it to be a problem - and that other folks here have mentioned having similar problems with 06 Civics - could clue you in that I'm describing an abnormality and not simply being picky or obtuse.
