This has been going on since PS2, if you ask me. Games used to be limited by graphical capabilities, but now that we are getting systems with amazing graphic powers, the stories and systems of these games are starting to lack miserably.
And, in my opinion, the field in which the most devastating blow occurred was RPGs. The plot and battle systems of these games are utterly nothing but recycled stories with slight variations, and all emphasis is put on making it look as "cool" as possible graphics-wise.
I miss the days of Super Nintendo where games had to be stellar with rich characters, engaging stories, and unique battle systems.
And that is the #1 reason I've yet to buy a next gen console.
