Offset, Offset, Offset. It's all about offset. Rubbing issues all depend on the offset you run along with tire size, and then of course drop. Give us your offset and then we can help. Also the offsets of the wheels you're considering.

As far as the 18's affecting performance: The shorter sidewall that should go along with going to 18's will help handling response and make the ride more stiff. If you go with 225 width tires you'll have more grip than stock as well. However, if you get 18's that weigh more than your stock wheels (23 lbs.) then the car will accelerate and brake slower and the shocks will work slightly less effeciently (depending how heavy the wheels are).
