i dont think their diagram is saying air from the middle of the grille will flow OVER to the right side and into the intake. i think its merely just to show that airflow coming in from that side (which im sure there is!) will make its way to the hole.

I also think that the plate that goes over the battery and covers everything is to maybe HELP incoming air...less obstructions(or placed for air to be trapped) for the air flow. that way there is less turbulence and a more direct/smooth flow to that area!

Also note that ECU cover can play a role in guiding airflow right into the intake hole.
