What you previous said is probably correct as the diagram does show air entering the grille and going into the hole. The other blue stream shows the air going over the hood and into the ram air tube which makes sense.
To me, the cf flat piece on the battery just seemed like a dress up item, some added bling. I learn something new everyday I guess.
