Well said. Can't really blame him if no one is willing to give him some insight.

D1, D2 and D3 refers to what gear you're in. D1 will restrict itself to first gear, D2 to second and so on.

The reason why it may seem to accelerate faster is because there's less gears to go through and it'll hit higher revs in each gear than it would in just "D." If you stick it in D2 and mash the gas, you'll notice how responsive the gas is. If it's in D and you do the same (mash the gas), the software has to think about what gear it should slip into, then provide the response.

By the way, I don't think these choices were included with the car as a replacement "sport shift." It can be used for towing something or getting up a hill without the automatic transmission struggling to find a gear.
