Wow, that's crazy. I actually got a bunk console after I sent in my launch console for the red ring.. The console they gave me to replace it failed but it didn't give me the red ring and they still replaced it.. Granted after telling them 20 times that it didn't have the red ring I finally said "Yes, it gives 3 flashing lights" and they finally just said "Okay sir, we're going to send you your box free of charge and you just send us your xbox360."
