For the best response, it is better if the filter was enclosed in an as large enclosure as possible and the intakes hosing kept short. A simple experiment to illustrate what I'm getting at would be trying breathe through a thin vs a large dia straw. Take a sharp inward breath through each stray in turn & you'll see what I mean.
