Essentially there are 2 parts to this:
First you download the torrent software, the best is uTorrent.
Then you find a reliable site which lists torrents. TORRENTS | TO | Your BitTorrent Search is a search site which lets you search some of the most popular torrent sites. The best and most reliable are mininova and piratebay IMO. Read comments on files before you d/l unless you are sure it is legit. Torrents with more seeders are more likely legit. If you download stuff that doesn't work but has comments saying it does then you are probably missing something, like a codec.
You may want to consider the legal / moral issues involved, thats up to you. Peerguardian is software you can download which essentially connects to a database with a list of ip's which are blacklisted, these ip's are known to be bad for one reason or another (maybe they are baiting you for information, maybe they just upload viruses.) Peerguardian largely acts as a filter to keep your information from those companies who are dedicated to making a huge legal deal out of this stuff.

Fact is that music and video media are forever changed now that file sharing exists. Time for companies who are trying to constantly press lawsuits to realise that they had better jump on the bandwagon before it is long gone and they are in the dust.
