Yes, many car manufacturers out there have a form of VVT, but Honda put it on the map. They may not have invented VVT, but they sure did show the world that you can get great fuel economy out of a low displacement engine and at the same time get great performance. VVT is most noticeable in Honda 4 Cyl engines then any other engines in the world.
Before my Si I owned an SVT Focus. It also had a form of VVT and while it did get good performance for a 2 liter, it does not compare to the K20 and it's i-Vtec system. The K series, F series and B series Honda engines really do feel like 2 engines in one. Great MPG and great performance for an NA engine.
