because the switch can't handle the power going through. The relay can. That's why its a 30amp relay.

The relay works like this.. The connection to the starter is open. Once a 12v signal is sent to the relay from the switch, the connection is closed for the time the button is pressed, and the engine starts.

YOU MUST USE A RELAY! Its only 4 bucks..so USE IT
