Within the movie, Cloverfield is just a code name for Central Park. I've never heard it called that before. Maybe Cloverfield is the name of the monster? Who knows. After seeing the movie, I still don't have an answer for you. As far as where the name came from, in Cali, there's an exit for Cloverfield (Blvd?), which is the exit you take to get to Bad Robot's offices. That's all there is to it.
