Taking a test drive

So perhaps this is a dumb question but: Is there a way to go about a test drive or is it pretty much walk in and ask?

Reason I'm asking is I've never gone about a test before. Only test rides were with my pop, back before the civic update, tested a few cars including the last generation civic hybrid.

As it was pointed out to me today I've never driven a civic or took a ride in one. None of my friends have one, and the two civics I've been in were both the hybrid, which as it was made clear to me IS NOT A CIVIC because it has nowhere near the ride of a normal civic. Well now I want to see just what the ride in a "normal civic " is really like and if its really even that different.

So do I have to call in advance? Bring anything with me? Pay a fee? I'm half tempted to ask to drive an Si but I doubt they would let me seeing as how I have to clue how to drive an MT. Any advice appreciated.
