I am theorizing a little here- but everywhere that you move restrictions on air flow (even if you don't increase the total potential volume of flow) you are increasing the amount of air that can go into the engine per minute, second, &c.
maybe this isn't right, but reducing the drag that the stock fins can be causing makes sense. In fact, I have to wonder if anyone at honda actually thought of making the fins angled in order to cut the air better...
