In the simplest of terms, yes. Rent it before buying it, it's not for everyone. However, the fighting system is actually quite deep. You're not going to get all too far in Ninja Gaiden Black/Sigma (Xbox/PS3) just hacking and slashing because they actually fixed the blocking where you can't just block in a 360 degree circle when in a fight. They will flank and attack. It's one of those games in that normal baddies can actually kill you quite easily.
