I want the most up-to-date, newest machine possible, coming with Leopard and the newest chips and what not. I'm not spending a grand for old technogy, and I'd like to be able to go into the Apple store and know what I need.

I am also contemplating a reliable case covering for the MacBook. I've seen my friend's cover and keyboard, and it looks like shit.
Congrats on your decision to go mac! I didn't look at your links, but you may consider waiting to see if new macbooks (revised Intel chips) are released 1/15 at the macworld expo... or if the rumored "ultra-portable" might be suitable for you.

taken from macrumors.com:

"Our Buyer's Guide, however, does not recommend buying MacBook Pros or Mac Pros at this time due to the long lead time since their last update. Rumors have also placed Mac Pro and MacBook Pro revisions in the near future with number of new Intel processors now available for the future machines. To balance this recommendation, however, readers should realize that updates could still be 1-2 months away, with Macworld Expo (January 15th) being the earliest possible date that these upgrades would be announced. And even if announced at Macworld, actual shipping dates could be delayed beyond that date."

"MacBook - Despite a November 2007 update, the MacBook could see competition with the Apple Sub-notebook expected at Macworld in January. So, unless you are certain that this ultra-portable will not change your decision, it would be best to wait to buy a MacBook until January 15th."

The first quoted paragraph is in regards to the MB Pro, so take that with a grain of salt, because there could likely be nothing new for macbooks... just sayin'. However, my theory is that new chip revisions to the MB Pros could also mean it would trickle down to the MBs.

Disclaimer: don't blame me if you wait and there is nothing new. If you need a computer now, then get one... just know, it will not be the fastest, most up-to-date MB for long. It's sad, but that's how apple works.
