i found a 3 post version of the female 1/8" plug and wired it up just as you originally suggested. the 5 post version of the female 1/8" plug made it very hard to attach the wires unless you use 28 gauge wire or thinner (which i didn't even have). i may later switch to it though because i think the wiring on that version would be more clean.

thanks ethlar for posting this mod....in the end it was insane easy! it took maybe 45 seconds to get to that aux connector. i used slightly thicker 20 gauge wire and they fit nice and tight perfectly into the aux connector. i mounted my female jack in the removeable panel inside the top of the cubby with the power outlet. nobody will ever see the jack and that cubby has a rubber sheet on the bottom so my Dell DJ doesn't slide around at all in there! i can't wait to use it at night because the volume and power buttons on it side (which are perfectly accessible with it sitting in the cubby) light up blue just like the dash.
