By going about things slowly & only killing people covertly (ie avoiding an out & out fight), you'll find the assassination much easier.

Im with you but you gotta kill the guards F'in with the citizens. Thats how you get them on your side. I am not just getting into massive fights. But I imagined it would be like Hitman and you would only kill like the 9 hits. Thats it. I mean you are easily killing 50 people/hit when you take into consideration all the helping of the villagers and the guys you come across on the roofs. Plus when your walking down an alley and a guard passes with no one else around you know you gotta stick him too....
I have gotten through the first 3 assasinations. No real problems yet although it took like 3 tries for the second guy when he throws you in that pit with like 7 dudes.
