I think amsoil is better particularly in the series 2000,
the only amsoil 5-20 available is the XL7500 which is not as good
as series 2000 and only rated fro 7500 miles.
Amsoil needs to bring out a 0-20 series 2000.
The advantage of synthetic is that the molecules don't break down
into smaller molecules. And other properties will test better,
less volatility, higher shear strength.
Conventional is fine for ordinary driving and short intervals like 4-5k miles
between changes. Amsoil pays for itself with higher mpg and longer life.
I have oil tests and know amsoil is better. I haven't done oil test on
rediline. But amsoil provided 1.5 more mpg than redline which says something.
Anecdotally, in my acura TSX the mobil synthetic blend was turning dark,
opaque black on the dipstick at 4-4.5k miles, mobil 1 was worst being
black at 3.5 k, amsoil series 2000 ran 7k before getting dark and still
semitransparent amber to 7-7.5 k miles. In our accords, amsoil 5-20
XL75000 is very clean transparent amber to 7-8k miles.
I could never measure an mpg benefit from mobil 1, but that was previous
generation which was said to not be a true synthetic. The new mobil 1
may be better, I haven't tried it.
Oil staying clean means to me it is working better maintaining film
strength on the piston rings and walls and valve guides. Those are the
only places blowby gets through into the crankcase oil.
I did a cost analysis of fuel savings, amsoil saves $300 per year changing
at 8k vs conventional changed at 4 k miles. With three cars in the family,
that is a lot of money.
However, with XL7500 amsoil I saw a 1 mpg drop vs series 2000.
I'll have to use the XL7500 in the civic because the 5-30 series 2000
amsoil runs high in the viscosity range.
You can read some test data on the amsoil site which they
claim is performed by an independent lab.

Shouldnt a good oil should get dirty as it does it's work cleaning out the engine? The dispersants should stop all the gunk from depositing in the oil pan.
I would be worried if my oil doesnt get dirty.Wear particles do not affect oil colour as they are too minute,it is the dust/sand that enter into the internals throuh air that effects oil colour & if its a good detergent oil it will prevnet that crap from collecting in critical parts of the enigine.
