You could have easily have gave him a run for his money if you had a stick. Automatic stinks for these kind of situations because there's a small lag when you slam the accelerator to find out what gear you want to be in and sometimes it's not in the right gear!
If you want more power.. the answer is simple, the regular R18 Civic isnt beefed up to be raced around. You should have probably considered an Si or something. Otherwise, look into a CAI and a cat-back exhaust (Magnaflow) and other sort of future mods.
Otherwise, you're pretty much stuck with an econobox, sorry.
