I too like the idea of the panel mount female 1/8" stereo jack. I got one from RS, but want to confirm my thoughts on the wiring.

There are 5 "pins" on the RS jack.

1 - ground
2 - Left (input)
3 - Left (output)
4 - Right (output)
5 - Right (input)

Basically in default mode (no male jack installed) pins 2 & 3 are shorted as are 4 & 5...this makes sense because in a stereo the signal would normally bypass the jack and the audio comes throught the ext. speakers, but if you plug in your headphones you separate the shorts and now the outputs are going to the headphones.

This indicates to me that there are 2 ways to wire this. For ref. I'll refer to pin #'s on the RS jack and the randomly assigned colors ethlar gave to the 6 pin Honda aux conn.

1) pin 1 to black, pin 2 to green, pin 5 to red, & then connect the 2 browns on the aux conn.

2) pin 1 to black, pin 2 to green, pin 5 to red, pin 3 & pin 4 each to one of the browns

Is this correct? If so is there an advantage to wiring #2? It seems cleaner to me since it only shorts the connection when the jack is plugged in and you might not have to hit the CD/AUX button to get back to the CD player if the jack isn't being used.

Definitely correct me if I'm wrong (or overthinking this)....thanks!
