Well, if you do one section at a time, then you can wipe down the area with a soft microfiber cloth each time. The claybar should pick up all the impurities in the paint so it should be safe to wipe down.

If you want to wash the whole car, to be on the safe side, then by all means.

As for you hood, try claybar first (to rid the surface of all crap) then scratch-x for best results. Wax afterwards.
