On the LX the stock knob has an attachment clip that connects to the silver oval on the shift boot. Just push down on the bottom part of the the connection and the boot part will come off, then just muscle the stock knob in a counterclockwise motion until it comes loose.
Then just keep spinning it until it comes off, and put your new knob on!
I put a Skunk2 knob on my LX and although the stock boot has an awkward clip-type thing inside the silver oval at the top where it connected to the stock knob... it doesn't look so awful that I needed to get a new shift boot.
