I remember someone doing this a while ago, and complaining about their shifting being more slugish. The reason being that the hose that they tried to pull to the side like the OP did, was actually hanging down a little bit too. The whole shifter mechanism is just below that. So anything that gets in its way will cause issues. Make sure if you do the same thing that you either take the hose completely off, or you really make sure its out of the shifters way.
