Does anyone know more about this? What is this maximum number? Or does it have something to do with the number of folders? I estimate the disc I am playing has over 400 mp3s/8 folders.

You leave too much room for speculation. What did you burn the disc with, what types of files(as in extensions) are your non mp3 files. Are you playing them on the stock radio?
Edit; and are the files you can access in one or different folders. Are all the folders in one directory?
