CR-V Towing - Info & Advice

Flat Towing CR-V 2WD and 4WD Models
CR-V 2WD and 4WD models can be flat towed (towed with all four wheels on the ground) at legal highway speeds up to 65 mph. To avoid damage to the 4WD system, 4WD models MUST be flat towed. Do not exceed 65 mph when towing, otherwise severe automatic transmission damage will occur.

Perform the following procedure for both 2WD and 4WD models every day immediately before you begin towing otherwise severe automatic transmission damage will occur:

Check the transmission fluid level. Do not overfill.
Start the engine.
Press on the brake pedal. Move the shift level through all its positions.
Shift to Drive (D), then to Neutral (N). Let the engine run for three (3) minutes, then turn it off. (Note: Severe transmission damage will occur if the vehicle is shifted from Reverse (R) to Neutral (N) and then towed with the drive wheels on the ground.)
Release the parking brake.
Leave the ignition switch in the ACCESSORY (l) position so the steering wheel does not lock. Make sure the steering wheel turns freely before you begin towing. Also make sure the radio and any accessory items plugged into the accessory power sockets are turned off so you do not run down the battery.
If you tow for more than 8 hours in one day, you should repeat the above procedure at least every 8 hours (when you stop for fuel, etc.).

When you stop towing your vehicle and shift out of the Neutral (N) position, you may not be able to move the shift lever from Neutral (N) to Reverse (R) or Park (P). If this happens, press the brake pedal and turn the ignition switch to the ON (ll) position, then shift out of Neutral (N).

For more information, refer to the CR-V Owner’s Manual.
